Summary:

A new student transfers into Tsubaki Akira’s class one day. The transfer student’s name is Urabe Mikoto and she seems to be a strange one as she isn’t too sociable with the girls in the class and she laughs uncontrollably in the middle of class one day. One day after school, Akira comes back to his classroom only to find Urabe at her desk asleep, drooling on her desk. Urabe wakes up and Mikoto sees her face and is smitten. Urabe realizes that it’s late and leave. Akira notices Urabe’s drool on her desk and wipes his finger over her drool and tastes it. The next day school Akira comes down with a fever and collapses. Akira stays home in bed and his fever doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Urabe visits him and forcibly feeds Akira some of her drool. Akira miraculously gets better, but wonders why. Urabe asks Akira if he tasted her drool; to which he confesses that he did. Urabe tell him that’s the reason, and Akira wonders if Urabe’s drool has some kind of poison or something. Urabe laughs at the notion and tell ‘Akira that he was simply love sick. This catches Akira off guard and the next day he asks Urabe if she’ll go out with him. Urabe tells him that the normal manner of asking a girl out won’t work on her and as she leaves Akira shows her a picture he’s held onto of a girl he had a crush on in middle school and tears it up stating he doesn’t need it anymore because Urabe is his girlfriend. Urabe is so overjoyed that her mouth overflows with drool. Urabe confesses that on the day she laughed in class she heard a voice that told her the Akira would be her first sex partner when she happened to look at him. Urabe leaves and tells him that from today onward she’s Akira’s girlfriend.

After Urabe becomes Akira’s girlfriend, Akira wants to try to do couple-like things like hold hands. Urabe isn’t too keen on the idea since there’s no real reason to though. Nevertheless, Akira tries to get closer to Urabe and ask her what her hobbies or skills are. Urabe tells him using scissors is her hobby, but Akira is a little confused by this so Urabe demonstrates this to him by cutting out flowers out of a sheet of tapestry at lightning-fast speed. Akira still tries to get closer to Urabe and tries asking her to come with him to see a movie, but Urabe tells him she’s busy. Tsubaki gets depressed and collapses on the side of the road. Urabe asks him what’s wrong and Akira tells her that they haven’t done anything couple-like since they’ve started dating. Urabe tells him she doesn’t feel the need since they have their bond of drool, but Akira doesn’t seem satisfied so she takes him to an abandoned building where she tells him to keep his eyes closed. Urabe gets undressed and sticks her finger in her mouth and sticks her drool filled finger into Akira’s mouth. Akira’s heart immediately starts beating erratically. Urabe explains to him that his heart is beating fast because her heart was beating fast when she fed Akira her drool. That night, Akira has a dream where Urabe wore a strange doll on her head, was naked, and they slept together. The next day Akira is still thinking about his dream and Urabe notices him acting strangely. Since Akira won’t tell her what kind of dream he had she sticks her finger into his mouth and tastes his drool. Urabe gets a nosebleed and tells Akira that he’s free to imagine and dream what he wants, but she doesn’t wear a strange doll on her head.

Opinions:

I’ve been reading the manga for years, so I’ve been looking forward to the anime adaption. First off, the anime feels kinda nostalgic in a way, and that is in itself refreshing to me. There’s something, maybe the direction, pacing, or the music but it just reminds me when I first started watching anime in the early 90s. The series is more or less like a classic love story but with a little twist; maybe that’s why? But I’m loving the series so far and I’m looking forward to more. I will say that Urabe’s voice seemed a little odd to me at first; maybe because the voice actor’s still new? But since episode 2 I’m getting accustomed to it and it’s starting to seem suitable for her.
