Virtual Hostess Bar game “Dream Club” for the underage!! Plus Dating Sim rant

If anyone reads Kotaku then I’m sure you may have come acorss their post on a certain Xbox 360 game coming out in Japan where you virtually visit a hostess bar and interact with the hostesses there. The name of the game is Dream Club and it pretty much follows the path of other dating sim games of “choose a girl” “get to know her” and eventually you get the girl. The only difference with this game is that alcohol plays a factor in the aptly named “Interactive Inshu System” IIS with Insu being Japanese for alcohol, and the effects of this system being “Emotional Talk System” ETS which assigns conversation topic options to the  X, A, and B keys.  Now I could criticize the idea of virtually picking up women with alcohol, is it wrong that I really want to play this game? Can’t stop myself, I’m already fighting the urge to buy IdolM@ster for the PSP. I know I don’t have a complete fluent control of the Japanese language yet, but I reeally want to play these games. The acutal quality of the game may be questionable and the whole thing reminded of the latest chapter of “The World God Only Knows” (Kami no mizo Shiru Sekai) a great read for those who love Love Comedies or Dating Sims and like to see those skills applied in “real life”.

The latest chapter deals with the increasing popularity of Dating Sims and to improve a games survivability in the market you need to get away from gimmicks and go back to basics, mainly story and character developement.

I can certainly agree with that. There aren’t too many games with heroines with staying power. Let’s take a look at a few classic examples, Kanon’s Ayu, Da Capo’s Kotori, every To Heart and To Heart 2 heroines…… All of these girls have staying power, The story is decent to great for some of them, but all of them receive good amount of character developement in their game routes. An example of a gimmicky game with heroines with a smaller presence is Doki Doki Majo Shinpan, course some could argue the other way on that, the game’s gimmicky and I barely remember anything about the heroines. granted I played with a limited knowledge of the Japanese language and guessed on a few choices. Still, getting back to the subject at hand I’d like to make a plea to those reading. Support good Bishoujo games! Da Capo is a  great game that’s been released in English by the fine people at Mangagamers.com, granted the price is at about $80 for a download. But!!!! At AX 2008 during the Circus panel, the staff of Circus discussed the possibility of bringing limited editions over depending on how well Da Capo sells. So, that means if it sells well enough we Westerners got a fighting chance to get ourselves some Circus goodies if we support this. So fellow Eroge players, support the game! Buy a Copy! Convince your friends to buy copies! I have already done so, and I plan to buy a copy for myself right before Spring Break so it won’t interferre with my current studies! Good Luck to us all and may we get a Limited Edition Da Capo II box set in the future with a Nanaka pillow!
