Summary:

Kotori returns home to Koyomi’s on a rainy night; the next day Kotori wakes up and comments to herself how she has a terrible look on her face. In the kitchen Kotori makes her some tea; the time is around noon and Koyomi suggests that she skip school today. On the way to school Jun’ichi seems to be waiting for Kotori, but Jun’ichi gives up on the idea after a while and continues towards school. Along the way he meets Miharu, Mako, and Moe and they playfully asks where Kotori is and Miharu even asks if they had a fight. At school, Jun’ichi is told by Kotori’s friends that she’s home sick today. Back in her home Kotori is remembering what happened with Jun’ichi last night. Someone calls on the intercom, it turns out to be Jun’ichi who came to see how Kotori was; the two talk through the intercom and Jun’ichi apologizes for yesterday and tells Kotori he’ll see her tomorrow.

The next day as Kotori is walking to school; her friends talk to her and can see she is still bothered so they invite her out. There are still some awkward moments between Kotori and Jun’ichi at school and the two even ignore each other in some moments.  At lunch Mako asks Jun’ichi about what’s going on between him and Kotori and Jun’ichi says he’s not sure either, but feels that it’s probably because of him. Kotori and her friends are eating cake at a cafe, and they just casually talk and Kotori apologizes for worrying them. Her friends laugh it off and tell her not to worry about it; Jun’ichi meanwhile is shooting hoops by himself. Back at their respective homes, Kotori and Jun’ichi are thinking of each other. Kotori thinks to herself that she wants to be with Jun’ichi, and yet she wasn’t able to accept it. She wonders why Jun’ichi wanted to clean out Nemu’s room and feels something is different about the situation and wonders if she’s being selfish. At school the next day during lunch, Suginami is discussing the situation between Jun’ichi and Kotori and Moe-sempai even comments on how the two look good together and Mako even begrudgingly accepts it. Eventually they get to the root of the matter which is Nemu’s room; asking Jun’ichi why after 1 year is he now cleaning out her room.

On her way home, Koyomi sees Kotori on the swings looking depressed and goes to talk with her; Kotori wonders why things got like this even though she likes Jun’ichi. Koyomi tells her that if she likes someone there’ll be unsure times, and asks Kotori why she likes Jun’ichi. Back at home, Jun’ichi is in Nemu’s room when Sakura appears behind him. Sakura asks Jun’ichi why he’s getting rid of her room, but Jun’ichi believes he needs to in order to clearly state that he’s over her. Jun’ichi continues stating that there’s someone by his side that he loves very much, but as long as this room is here he can’t move on. Sakura tells him that he’ll forget about Nemu by doing this, and Jun’ichi denies this; Sakura asks for who’s sake is he doing this, did Kotori ask him to forget about Nemu? Jun’ichi tells her no, and Sakura tells him he finally gets it.

Later that night, Kotori is in front of the great Sakura tree and thinks about why she likes Jun’ichi and she remembers the first time she met him and how she thought he was an honest person who thought about the feelings of everyone around him. She reminisces of all the moments she shared with Jun’ichi and believes it’ll be okay because that can start anew, and begins to sing. As Kotori finishes her song, she notices that Jun’ichi is there; and Jun’ichi tells her he’s remembered, various things, important things, and things he can’t forget and apologizes to Kotori. They both talk about how they met here and a lot has happened. Jun’ichi embraces Kotori, thanks her, and tells her he loves her and Kotori tells Jun’ichi she loves him and kisses him. The next day the two are wed. Kotori is wonders if everyone is waiting when all of the trees turn into blooming Sakura trees and Kotori and Jun’ichi walk towards the school through all the blooming Sakura trees as we see them walking from a birds eye view, slowly zooming out into a view of the island.

Opinions:

*Sniff* Congratulations Kotori!!! You finally got that ungrateful/unworthy Junichi, sure Nemu had to die for it to happen; but still!!!! You deserve your happiness! Now that obligatory congratulations are done with, let’s get down to business. For us members of the Kotori fan club, this OVA was a long-time due to us since they had 2 seasons of nothing but Nemu endings. Now I get why the first season had a Nemu ending since that’s the widely accepted default ending, but the second season gave me hope for a Kotori ending, and proceeded to mercilessly crush that hope. I closed my heart off for a while after that…………till now, I was skeptical at first on the OVA, but it ended so well. The main story is nothing more than a little misunderstanding between Jun’ichi and Kotori, but the way they handled the ending just blew me away, like I was actually at their wedding in fact. The transition from Kotori kissing Jun’ichi in front of the sakura tree to their wedding kiss was great, and how they used Sakura saku mirai koiyume as the backdrop music to end the OVA was like coming full circle so I loved it. The whole scene of the two newlyweds walking through the path of sakura trees is really romantic and just moves my heart. Overall I loved this OVA, and while the body of the story rates from okay to decent, the ending is the best part and worth its weight in gold to a Kotori fan; which is why I particularly recommend this OVA to Kotori fans. Now all that’s left is to do something similar for Nanaka in Da Capo II.
