Summary:

In the aftermath of the marathon, Nagi is sulking on the field apologizing to Hayate; though Hayate says it’s ok since they won in an alternate universe. Back at the mansion, Nagi is questioning Klaus as to why Hayate is still fired since she placed 2nd; which Nagi credits to Hayate’s training. Klaus admits that Hayate’s made some progress, but they had a deal that Hayate would be fired if Nagi didn’t place 1st. Nagi responds to this with telling Klaus he’s fired as well; the reason being that Hayate’s failure as a butler is the responsibility of the head butler, aka Klaus. Klaus tries to dispute this and asks for Maria’s help in convincing Nagi; unfortunately for Klaus Maria recalls how Klaus had her and Saki dress up as Maid Black Max Heart, and proceeds to say that firing Klaus wouldn’t be a bad idea. At this time Hayate comes into the room to defend Klaus as he says he’s responsible for his own failure, and Hayate invites Klaus to come with him as they look for a new employer together. Klaus tells Hayate to wait, as he will give him another chance; though Maria and Nagi are well aware that Klaus is doing this to save his own job. Klaus instructs Hayate to retrain himself at the Toranoana for Butlers. As Hayate leaves the mansion, he tells Nagi that he will overcome this trial and return to her side.

At the train station Hayate is going over how the root of his problem was his obsession with money as it caused him to lose focus of his actual goal. Hayate notices a nun sitting down and comments to himself that a person like that wouldn’t be restrained by money; though he is quickly proven wrong as the sister proceeds to quickly pick up the change Hayate has dropped, and asks if she can keep it. On the train Hayate notices that he’s sitting next to the nun from earlier; suddenly a shady-looking man kicks the wall next to Hayate and begins to go on a rant on how he hates nicely dressed guys as he has a 3 million yen debt and can’t afford the anime box sets of his favorite series, and can’t forgive people like Hayate who work everyday. This little rant eventually leads him to try to punch Hayate; though before he can, the Sister from earlier asks him to stop. Unfortunately the shady man is more into Mikos than Sisters and proceeds to try to get violent with the Sister; fortunately, the sister catches his fist and proceeds to beat him thoroughly. In the aftermath, Hayate thanks the Sister for her help; though the sister expects a name brand tea cup because she assumed that you get one if you save someone on a train, because the same thing happened to Densha Otoko. Hayate corrects her saying that it was a guy who saved a girl, but gives her a candy bar he bought earlier.

On the way to the Toranoana for Butlers, the map Hayate is using reveals that it’s at a church called Alex San Marco. When Hayate arrives there the sign says Alex San Marco church, and in smaller print “also the Toranoana for butlers”. The doors to the church open and the Sister from earlier welcomes Hayate and introduces herself as Sister Fortesia. Meanwhile back at Nagi’s mansion, Nagi is explaining to Ayumu that Hayate is out training at the moment; though Ayumu questions if it’s alright for Hayate to be out by himself as he tends to attract girls and imagines perverted S&M things Nagi’s might do to Hayate as an example. Nagi denies this saying Hayate wouldn’t look at any other girl but her, but Maria questions the chance of Hayate switching to boys. Back at the church, the nun informs Hayate that she’s from Greece and Hayate comments that it must be a beautiful place. Hayate asks her what the Toranoana for Butlers is, and Sister Fortesia tells him it is a place of redemption where incompetent butlers get retrained, and these incompetent butlers train to get a little bit more useful and informs a hurt Hayate that the training will begin tomorrow. That night as Hayate is trying to sleep, Nagi calls him to ask if he’s’ with a strange woman; though Hayate comments that he couldn’t be involved with anyone stranger than Nagi. Nagi asks Hayate to come back soon, and Hayate assures her that he’ll overcome his trial and come back to her; though before he can finish his sentence, Sister Fortesia comes in telling to shut up as it’s night time. Sister Fortesia takes Hayate’s cell phone and turns it off; leaving Nagi worried that Hayate’s with a strange woman and asks Maria for the location of the Toranoana for Butlers.

The next day Sister Fortesia apologizes for the night before as she tends to lose herself on matters of money and sleep. Sister Fortesia explains that she’ll have Hayate do butler training with a chibi Ayumu volunteering to help with that, but Sister Fortesia changers her mind and informs Hayate this training will be to complete the “Butler’s Quest”. The butler’s quest is fantasy trial that involves a huge underground dungeon that was made by the church’s priest and contains the Butler’s Medal to clear the quest. Hayate asks if he has to form a party to clear the dungeon, and Sister Fortesia compliments Hayate’s ability to understand the situation. Nagi, who was behind them, says she’s excited about the quest and insists on participating in it with Hayate. Nagi runs off, with Hayate following her to get another party member. In the student council room of Hakuou Academy, Yukiji is picking up her prize money from the marathon and is sorely disappointed at how little she’s receiving which is 12,020 yen instead of the 150 million she assumed she would get. Hinagiku informs her that she deducted the debts that Yukiji had; to Yukiji calls Hina mean, but Hina points out that she didn’t take out the 30,000 she lent Yukiji and should be thankful for getting any spending money at all. Yukiji calls Hina an idiot and flat-chested and leaves. Outside Yukiji is sulking and wonders if there are any fast cash adventures lying around; at this moment Hayate and Nagi are walking by talking about how they need party members for their adventure. While discussing, the two agree to avoid people like Yukiji as she’d set off every trap in the dungeon; Yukiji stops them and tells them she can’t let that comment slide and tells them the elf Deedlit Yukiji will join them. Hayate declines her help and leaves, but Yukiji grabs his leg and begs him to take her along and Hayate gives in.

In the student Hayate has something to request of Hinagiku and Hina, addressing Hayate as Ayasaki-kun (implies some coldness or hostility for those who haven’t caught on), asks what he needs. Hayate informs her that he has a challenge to complete in the underground dungeon of Alex San Marco Church, but Hinagiku questions if she can be of any help since she can’t even cross a suspension bridge.  Hayate asks her if she’s still mad about the incident during the marathon race, but Hina denies it; though she’s obviously lying. Hina comments that she didn’t know Hayate was a sadist, but Hayate says it’s because it was for Nagi; so Hina comments that Hayate’s a lolicon then. Hayate, understanding the situation, apologizes and leaves. As Hayate is walking away he decides that he needs someone reliable to balance out the other two in his party; he sees Saki and asks if she knows anyone reliable. Saki replies that her master, Wataru is very reliable which causes Hayate’s expression lights up. Far away at Isumi’s residence, Isumi is accepting a job of exorcising some ghosts at Alex San Marco church from an elderly nun; whose name is Sister Fortesia. At the underground dungeon, Hayate is with his party and Sister Fortesia and about to enter the dungeon.

Opinions:

We finally get to see Yui Horie’s “Sister Fortesia” after a long pause from the OVA!!! I think her voice suits the nun well; particularly how sweet her voice sounds when she’s saying horrible things (apparently because she has some bad Japanese). Best part of this episode is where she’s about to deliver the finishing blow saying “Amen”; awesome, just nose-bleed-inducing awesome. Unfortunately for Hayate, this episode marks the start of what I call “The Hinagiku Tsundere Arc”; though granted, she was a tsundere before; this episode has her tsun meter at an artic cold towards Hayate. The plus side of this is where it ends up; which is Hina’s birthday and for those who’ve read the manga, it’s a party that ends with a bang! And don’t let the flat-chested comment get to you Hina-chan, remember: “Flat-chests are a status symbol!”.  Getting back to the episode, next episode seems to have Hayate obtaining his “Finishing Move”; which seems a little odd, considering the magnitude of some of the moves Hayate used first season are a little advanced for “Finishing Moves”.
