Summary:

A few hours before Hayate arrived, Hina has been looking at the clock and getting irritated that it’s an hour past the appointed time of 9PM and Hayate still hasn’t arrived and starts to take her frustrations out on a nearby clock. Hina assumes Hayate forgot and slowly drifts to sleep and remembers a moment from her childhood where she was looking for her parents are discovering they were gone; as Hina wakes up she sees Hayate, and checks the clock only to be thoroughly pissed that’s it’s now 11:30PM and takes out Masamune and strikes Hayate, with Hayate catching the bokken with his hands and apologizing. Hina assumes that Hayate wanted a Miyamoto Musashi-like atmosphere since he came late to get his opponent off guard; though Hayate tells her it’s more like he forgot. Hayate tries to explain the situation, but it ends up in more misunderstandings and Hina tells him to take his weapon; Hayate desperately tells her that she can just consider it her victory; though Hina says that even if he says that she won’t feel like she’s won, and she chases after Hayate.

At Isumi’s residence, Father Linn is asking Isumi why she allowed weapons in the challenge letter. Isumi replies it’s because with weapons, victory goes to whoever loses their weapon first; with bare hands, they’ll be rolling around the floor and their bodies will be touching. There’s also the matter that Hayate’s at a disadvantage, not only because his opponent is a girl, but also because Hina still has Masamune. Masamune is a Saginomiya family treasure that can unleash the full potential of its wielder. With Masamune in hand, Hina will be able to read all of Hayate’s movements; though as a tradeoff, the user becomes very emotional. Back with Hayate, he’s having difficulty avoiding Hina’s strikes and is constantly apologizing in hopes of getting her to stop. While being pushed into a corner, Hayate sees an “angel” that looks like a squirrel dressed as Obi Wan Kenobi that gives him advice on a special move. He’s instructed to use “B-Dash Attack!” and tells Hayate to call out “B”; though Hayate seems skeptical. Hayate asks for more guidance, and the angel tells him showing the difference in chest size is the greatest difference in strength. Unfortunately that’s the last piece of advice the “angel” can give, as Hina cuts through the illusionary squirrel. As Hayate is apologize, Hina is getting emotional due to the effects of Masamune and stops right before she delivers the finishing blow to Hayate and drops Masamune and tells Hayate “It’s the most important day of the year for me, so be sure to remember it, idiot”. As Hina leans on Hayate, he apologizes once again. At that moment Nagi wakes up and says that it might be better to package the DVD in broadcast order instead of chronological order; otherwise there’ll probably be a difference when watching the TV and DVD version. Maria, confused, bids her goodnight.

Back in the student council room, Hina is sitting down and thinking to herself that she made an once-in-a-lifetime mistake and is regretting blurting out what she said earlier. Hayate hands her some tea and comments that it was surprising to see such a feminine side to Hina; to which Hina replies “Just kill me!” Hina starts getting a little irritated as she feels she’ll lose at this rate. Hina shows Hayate the watch Nagi gave her and in a challenging manner asks him if he can give her something worth more. Hayate hands Hina a bag of handmade cookies. Hayate thought of making a cake, but thought that someone else could get her a better cake and since Hina and her friends are rich; Hayate aimed for something a little more plain. Hayate also comments that his family was so poor that he had birthdays where he had a cookie in place of a cake. Hayate asks if he lost, but Hina shakes her head and says she was just reminded of a similar experience where she got a cookie as a cake and a small hairpin as a present. Hayate’s surprised since Hina’s family seems so rich; Hina slowly replies that it’s because they aren’t her real parents. Before Hina’s 6th birthday, her real parents disappeared and left her and her sister with an 80,000,000 yen debt. Yukiji paid off the debt somehow (insinuated to be through Columbia smuggling), and after that they were taken in by the Katsura family. Hina’s father was originally Yukiji’s teacher in grade school; though he’s not a teacher anymore he’s always been worried about Yukiji.

Hina re-asks her question if he Hayate’s ever thought there was a reason they his parents abandoned him. Hayate asks her if she doesn’t like her current mother; Hina replies that she loves her, but she also loved her biological mother too. Hayate asks her to come with him and takes her outside to the balcony; though Hina is a little reluctant to do so. Hayate holds onto Hina and shows her the beautiful view outside and tells her that while there may or may not have been a reason, while they may seem unfortunate to others, and they carry a deep wound in their hearts; where they are now isn’t so bad. It’s in this moment that Hina finally understands that she’s in love with Hayate, but was scared to admit it to herself in fear of the possibility of Hayate also leaving her. Hina replies that she’s an idiot since, just like this view, she was so scared she couldn’t see it; Hayate asks her if she’s still scared, and Hina replies that she is but it’s not a bad feeling.

The next day at school Nagi is asking about what Hayate got Hina as a present, and considering the possibility that Hina could also like Hayate. Hayate laughs it off and replies that it’s impossible; Hina runs past the two of them and slaps Hayate on the back while greeting them. Hina tells Hayate that nothing good will come if has such a gloomy expression this early in the day and calls him “Hayate-kun”, and Hayate reaffirms to Nagi that there’s no way that Hina would ever like him. While Hina is running off, she thinks to herself that it’s a great thing that she’s in love with someone. At the student council room, Hina is still scared to see the view on the balcony.

In the short special segment we are shown the aftermath of Kotetsu’s “abduction” of Nagi. First he was arrested since kidnapping is kidnapping regardless if it’s a joke (though Hayate is guilty of the same thing). Though since it was his first offense and due to Nagi’s kindness, Kotetsu’s punishment was lightened; though Hayate replies he should be in jail for the rest of his life. Nagi comments that Hayate looks “dark”, but Maria tells her that Hayate must have a deep scar in his heart. Kotetsu comes in and tells Hayate he’s on probation now so he doesn’t belong behind bars, and tells him he wanted to see him. Hayate starts getting creeped out and starts beating on Kotetsu.

Opinions:

This is the episode I’ve been waiting for!!! It was everything I remembered and hoped for! There were so many HayateXHina moments that were enhanced through the use of music and timing. This will be my favorite episode for a long while; at least until they animate Hina and Hayate’s “date”. Favorite part of the episode is probably the end where Hina is telling her mom and dad that she’s in love with someone and that it’s a wonderful thing. Truly girls are at their cutest when they’re in love.
