Summary:

While running some errands, one day Akira’s older sister runs into Urabe. Akira’s sister invites Urabe to some coffee and she starts to reminisce about her days a schoolgirl and tells Urabe about her time as a student when she attended Urabe and Akira’s school. She reveals to Urabe that she had a boyfriend during school, but they drifted apart after they graduated. Akira’s sister tells Urabe that she started thinking about this after Akira suddenly asked her if she had a boyfriend after he saw her drooling in her sleep. After their little chat, Akira’s sister thanks Urabe for her time and as they part Urabe thanks her and asks her to continue to get along with her. The next day Akira, his sister, and his father go to visit his dead mother’s grave. They all pray, and give their report to her. Afterwards Akira’s sister mentions that she talked to their mother about Akira and asks what Akira talked to her about. Akira just mentions that he talked about things that are currently going on in his life (Urabe).

The next day after school, Urabe and Akira are walking home together and Urabe mentions to Akira that she met with his sister a few days ago. Eventually Urabe asks him if he likes Sakuramochi since his sister mentioned that everyone in their family loves them. Akira tells her that his mom loved them and that they visited her grave yesterday and reveals to Urabe that his mother died when he was young, but he was too young to remember. Before they part, Urabe asks Akira if they can meet Sunday to visit his mother’s grave. So that Sunday Urabe and Akira visit his mother’s grave. Urabe brings some flowers to place on Akira’s mother’s grave and Akira is surprised at how dressed up Urabe is. Urabe prays to Akira’s mother and asks Akira what type of person his mother was. Akira tells her that he doesn’t really remember since his sister has been more of a mother to him. Urabe then asks Akira put his left hand on his mother’s grave while they exchange saliva. As the drool is exchanged, Urabe starts to cry. Urabe explains that even though he doesn’t remember he apprantly cried a lot and tells Akira that his mother was very important to him and that she hopes she will one day be as important to him. As the two walk home Akira comments that it was a little word doing something that could be construe as lewd in front of his mother’s grave, but Urabe tells him it can’t be helped since they’ll do more lewd things from here on out.

Opinions:

So that concludes Mysterious Girlfriend X. I don’t believe the part with Akira visiting his dead mother was in the manga, but certainly worked well with creating some closure for the last episode. I do wonder if there will be more seasons as there is definitely more story in the source material. Well, it was definitely a good first season. I found Urabe helping Akira to rediscover his love for his mom to be a little touching, and the line where she says that she one day hopes to become as important to him as his mother as well. With that, I’m psyched for the summer season! (even though it already started).
