Summary:

Hayate has broken his cellphone due to an accident in the kitchen so he goes shopping for a new phone and takes Nagi with him. While Hayate is going over calling plans with the representative, Nagi wanders around and gets lost. Eventually Nagi notices that Hayate’s not around and assumes he is the one who is lost and goes to the lost child desk to see if he’s there. Once Nagi is there though, she is led to the back room since they believe she is the one who is lost. In the room there are already a group of 3 boys who are there who sarcastically welcome Nagi and tell her she shouldn’t be embarressed being a lost child at her age. Their comments get to Nagi and she challenges them to the Hayate no Gotoku TCG. Nagi faces off against the boys, and gets cornered after the first turn. Nagi however is able to turn the tide and completely destroys the boys. Hayate comes in to see the young boys referring to Nagi as “boss”, and Nagi is embarressed at being seen in such a state by Hayate.

It’s March 29 and Sakukya visits Nagi one day to inform Hayate that April 3rd is her birthday; Sakuya asks Hayate for a laugh as a gift. The whole matter leads to Hayate having to tsukkomi Maria with a harisen. Though in typical manner, Hayate fails, ends up in a misunderstood situation, Nagi punishing him, and Sakuya laughing. After the whole incident Sakuya informs him that she’ll look forward to his performance on her birthday; which depresses Hayate as he thought what he was just doing was her present.

Opinions:

Well this episode focused on 2 chapters in the manga; side-stories really. The first half was a blantant advertising for the actual card game, and it kind of worked on me. While I’m not big on TCGs, the images they had of Hinagiku has me considering buying a pack. The second half of the episode had me mildly amused with Hayate having trouble doing a tsukkomi on Maria. She’s not the type of character you do that type of thing on and get away with you know? Next episode shows Sakuya’s maid Haru (who some may already know is not a new character but the alternate version of an existing character). In any case I’m thrilled at having a new maid character in the series and Haru’s cheery maid demeanor adds into the repertoire of maid stereotypes that we already have (let’s see, we have Maria as the “perfect” maid type, Saki as the “Clumsy” type, so yeah Haru is the “Cheery” type).
