Summary:
Continuing from last week, Haqua comments that Elcea also got caught in the spirit capturing jars a lot during class back in the demon world. Elcea is ecstatic to see Haqua, who was her old classmate back in Hell. Haqua comments that Elcea hasn’t changed at all, and Elcea notices that Haqua is wearing the uniform of the Runaway Spirit Squad, and Haqua directs her attention to her armband. Haqua formally introduces herself as Haqua du Lot Herminium, the Section Chief of the area for members of the Runaway Spirit Squad. Elcea is impressed and Haqua allows her to shake her hand. Elcea happily shakes her hand and goes over how amazing Haqua is. Apparently Haqua has been #1 ever since Elementary school and bhas been a 1st class demon, and compared to that Elcea was always bad and forced to clean; thus ending up as a 3rd class demon. Elcea introduces Haqua to Keima, but Keima is too busy playing his PFP and gets caught up in an “event” and makes some odd poses to get a Wi-Fi signal in order to complete the event. Haqua starts laughing, and comments to Elcea that it must be hard to capture spirits with a partner like that. Haqua asks Elcea how many spirits she’s captured. Elcea hesitantly asks Haqua how many she’s captured, and Haqua blushingly replies 10. Elcea is impress that Haqua has captured that many and comments that she needs to try harder since she’s only caught 5.
Haqua is surprised to hear that Elcea has caught 5 spirits, but then starts laughing and comments to her that she doesn’t have to force herself to lie since she can’t catch even 1 spirit. Elcea tells her that she really has captured 5 spirits. Haqua tells her that capturing 5 spirits in 2 months is at a level that warrants receiving the Demon Medal. As Haqua leaves Elcea tells her that she’s amazing and must have 2 medals by now. Haqua remains silent, and suddenly a voice coming from the detector informs Elcea that a spirit has escaped and to capture it immediately. Apparently a district chief failed to capture it, and the spirit has accumulated quite a bit of power and is to be considered dangerous. Elcea notes that must be why the spirit detector went off earlier. Haqua wonders what idiot let the spirit go, and Elcea suggests they go together to look for it since it’s still in the area. Haqua tells Elcea that there’s no reason for her to go with Elcea since she’s the District Chief, and Elcea is a lower class demon. Elcea tries to get Keima to go, but he’s busy trying to collect another event; which leads her to say she hates today’s Keima.
Haqua is searching the school for the runaway spirit, and notes that she has to find it before anyone else does. Haqua leans on the balcony outside and expresses that she wanted to be assigned to Europe because was born in the West. Haqua comments that it wasn’t suppose to be like this. Suddenly Keima asks her if she wants his help; as he collects another event via WiFi. Haqua laughs it off and asks Keima what a human can do, and tells him to go back to Elcea. Out of the blue Keima assures Haqua that he won’t tell Elcea that it was Haqua who let the escaped spirit run away. Haqua tries to deny it, but Keima backs his suspicions by mentioning that Haqua was looking for a spirit earlier before her superior said anything. Furthermore she didn’t ask Elcea for help, even though it would be easier to look for it. Keima states Elcea’s help would be inconvenient. Haqua starts panicking and notes that Keima seems completely different from when she first saw him.
Suddenly Elcea lands on Keima in her search for Haqua. Haqua tries to get Elcea away and changes the subject. Elcea starts praising Haqua again, and Keima slyly hints that Haqua might now be so perfect; which leads to Haqua swatting him away. Haqua orders Elcea to go search for the spirit to get her away. While alone with Haqua, Keima asks her if she’s finally willing to admit to letting the spirit escape. Haqua tells him that she was just careless. Keima tells her he just wants information because prior to Haqua coming Keima couldn’t trust any information from Elcea because it’s unreliable. Keima tells Haqua that he wants to be freed from this game and to do that he needs information.
Keima and Haqua enter the courtyard, where Haqua notices that there are residual signs of a runaway spirit. Haqua uses her Hagoromo to look into the past. Haqua starts thinking that Keima is something, to threaten a demon, and when Keima correctly assumes her thoughts Haqua starts threatening Keima telling him that while she may look nice she’ll kill him once they’ve found the runaway spirit. Keima calmly assumes that she won’t do that because if Keima dies Elcea dies, and Keima comments that Haqua doesn’t seem to be the type to kill her friends. Haqua refutes that she’s Elcea’s friend and continue looking for the runaway spirit. Haqua comments that it’ll be dangerous if they don’t capture that spirit soon, and Keima comments that it shouldn’t be that dangerous. Keima comments that Elcea told him the spirits were evil, but Keima comments that even if they’ve powered up they’re still human souls and notes it should be easy for demons to handle. Haqua corrects Keima and tells them the spirits are indeed evil souls, but they’re the souls of evil demons. They’re “real” demons, different from her and Elcea.
Haqua explains that long ago Hell was a place where evil human souls are raised to feed demons, but there were some demons who did not like this practice. So they sealed away the old demons and created a new Hell, a Hell ruled by logic that ushered in a new era for demons. Haqua stops her explanation when she notices Keima playing his PFP and asks if he’s even listening. Keima tells her he at least understands the basics. Keima continues Haqua’s explanation and states that runaway spirits are realy the old demons who are trying to make their return. The spirits are weak after their escape from Hell and have no physical body; which is why they target humans. The spirits feed on negative emotions and hide themselves in the openings of people’s hearts and feed on the negative emotions to grow and are tracked down by Elcea and the rest of the Runaway Spirit Squad. Haqua is surprised that Keima already knew and asks him if Elcea told him. Keima tells her no, replies that it’s a simple conclusion if you piece together previous events and Haqua’s explanation. Keima also says another thing to consider is that the girls may be using the strange abilities of the demons inhabiting them and cites Kanon’s turning invisible, Shiori’s high-speed reading, and Kusunoki’s splitting into two as examples. Haqua tells them that’s only the case when the demons are weak, because the humans can leech off their power then. Keima asks what happens when the demons fully mature, and Haqua explains that the demons reincarnate as the children of the girls they inhabit.
Outside Elcea is staring at firetrucks, but pulls herself together and goes off to search for the runaway spirit. Keima takes Haqua explanation of how the brutal Hell’s era is over as the reason why Elcea doesn’t seem very demonic, but Haqua asks him not to assume all demons are like Elcea.
Haqua drags Keima with her to look for the runaway spirit, and look for places with negative emotions. They first head to the baseball field as the team’s never won a game, and end up at the old theater for the Drama Club. Haqua walks in the door and her sensor immediately goes off. Keima prepares to leave because he believes he won’t be of help and from here on out it’ll be work for demons, but Haqua tries to get him to stay. Above all, Keima says that since Haqua’s caught 10 spirits there shouldn’t be a problem. It’s at this moment that Haqua admits that she hasn’t caught a single spirit yet and starts getting depressed and wonders why everyone else is able to. Haqua suddenly gets a message from Elcea, who’s with the Drama Club, asking for help. Behind Elcea is the escaped spirit.
Opinions:
This episode covers part of chapter 22 through chapter 24 of the manga. A faithful adaption as usual, and it was everything I was hoping for in terms of Haqua! We got to see her acting cocky, depressed, embarrassed, it was all the emotions you love to see from Haqua! Lots of information regarding runaway spirits was revealed this episode (unless you read the manga). Not much to say for this episode except that I’m looking forward to the next episode, and the cute preview pic this episode features………..Elcea! Elcea’s a cute character and all, but she doesn’t strike a chord in my heart the way Kanon, Haqua, Ayumi, or Kusunoki do. Maybe it’s because she’s technically an “imouto” character?
