Summary:

Keima restates to Chihiro that she’ll be confessing her love tomorrow after school, and Chihiro sadly nods and agrees. That nite Chihiro is looking over the materials Keima gave her with the TV on the weather stating it’ll be raining tomorrow, but it’ll be sunny by afternoon.  At the same time, Keima is watching the same weather broadcast while working on the details for tomorrow’s confession. Keima tells Elcea that he was surprised that his knowledge from gaming sims also applied to guys, and notes it made it easier thinking of Chihiro as the protagonist of a game since she has no personality. Elcea is upset to hear Keima say that and tells him that she has a lot of good qualities. That night Chihiro has a dream of being rejected after confessing, only to have someone comfort her. Chihiro wakes up that morning and leaves for school. She makes a lot of side trips on the way with a sullen look on her face. Eventually she goes to a convenience store and picks up some meat buns. At school, Elcea is disuised with a mustache in order to play Yuuta so Chihiro can practice her confession. Keima gets concerned since she’s not there yet and sends Elcea to find her.

Chihiro is on her way to school and smiles while carrying 2 meat buns from the convience store. Keima at that time is getting frustrated over working on a confession for a guy, and that Chihiro isn’t taking the confession seriously. Keima lies down on the bench, and stares at the sky, proclaiming he doesn’t need real girls. Chihiro shows up and offers Keima one of the meat buns she bought. Keima brings up the confession, but Chihiro keeps changing the subject. She mentions that a Chinese restaurant opened up and asks Keima if he wants to go with her later, but he declines stating that after Chihiro successfully confesses to Yuuta they won’t be hanging out anymore.

Chihro tells Keima that she won’t confess, and says that she probably didn’t like Yuuta that much and laughs it off. This makes Keima snap and he tells Chihiro that she’s different from the others he met who gave it their all, and tells Chihiro to be serious. Chihiro responds to Keima that nothing will happen if she gets serious and  that she can’t be like Ayumi or Kanon, and that she can’t shine like them and leaves. Elcea comes back to find Keima on the bench. Keima tells her that the confession failed, and comments to himself that Chihiro had some parameters to her and that he focused too much on the guy and didn’t look at Chihiro enough. Keima notes that the gap in Chihiro’s heart might have widened but goes to look for Chihiro, stating he’ll chase the runaway spirit.

Keima and Elcea go looking for Chihiro, and Keima finds on a boat near the school. Chihiro is near at the rails, and Keima believing she’s about to jump tackles her. Chihiro walks away from him and tells him to go away. Keima tells her he came because he was worried about her, but she tells he doesn’t have to worry about her and tells him he was right in calling her half-assed. Chihiro rationalizes that she can’t do sports or studying particularly well and without that she’s just average. Chihiro looks quite happy and accepting as she says this, but Keima tells her to stop lying and admit she’s in pain. Chihiro questions Keima’s statement, but Keima questions why Chihiro would chase after a guy if she weren’t in love. Chihiro reasons that she wanted to be with Yuuta because she felt like she was shining with him. Chihiro admits she felt that she and Keima were similar, and that Keima would understand her since he escapes reality through video games.

Keima admits to Chihiro that he’s disappointed with the real world, but he’s not disappointed with himself. He believes that only he can decide what’s boring and what’s fun, and as long as he wishes for it nothing is impossible. Keima even tells Chihiro that if she wishes for something she can do it, but Chihiro tells him that it isn’t true; there are limits, and even if she wants to, she can’t be like Kanon. Keima retorts that it’s up to her. Keima admits he thought of Chihiro as average, but states she’s one independent girls out there. Keima even tells her that she’s the only person who can knock him down so far. Chihiro still doesn’t believe him and tells him that even she wants to shine, but believes she’s average. Keima then kisses Chihiro and tells her she can do anything and that whenever she loses confidence he’ll come to save her. With that the runaway spirit in Chihiro comes out and Elcea captures it.

In the aftermath of the capture, Chihiro decides to start up a band and is looking for members. She asks Elcea if she wants to join, and gives her pick of any position, but states that the vocals will be her’s. Elcea’s nervous because she can’t play any instruments, and Chihiro tells her she sucks at singing, but tells her that she’s always the vocalist in her life so she has to sing. With that Chihiro writes down Elcea’s name under guitarist. Chihiro walks home, but with a more upbeat attitude and starts air guitaring on her way. Back in the classroom, Keima starts complaining about his frustration on reality, but starts thinking that everyone is working hard in this reality and starts wondering about himself.

Opinions:

This episode incorporates some of Chapter 31 and Chapter 32 of the manga. So they stayed true to the manga; after last week I thought for sure they would’ve gone with a “Chihiro confesses, and gets rejected” route. This wouldn’t really changed how things turned out, which is why I thought they might do it. The episode showed off more of Chihiro’s personality so I’m starting to like her more. So the problem was as I though before and it’s just how much of Chihiro they show that makes her come off as plain. After the events of the episode you see a little more of her fears and her passion; ironically it’s harder to give her a personality because she’s normal, while the other heroines are pretty much stereotypes, but have a definitive personality by being simple. I thought they really did a good job at expressing Chihiro’s change of mood, and change in her outlook on life by comparing the beginning scene of her walking to school and the scene of her walking home from school. It’s almost the same scene, just seen frome 2 different perspectives of state of mind. The omake pic this week is of Chihiro and maybe it’s whole “girl with guitar” thing, but it reminds me of K-ON. From the title of the next episode, it looks like we’ll get more Haqua!

Oh boy, I love it when the series gets to Haqua, this series really needed a tsundere who was part of the permanent cast. And hey, any Haqua scenes are good Haqua scenes.

It was amazing how the producers at Manglobe managed to pull off the Chihiro transformation. I was surprised that she turned out to be one of my favorite characters. She surely has more personality than all the other girls, strangely enough.
