Summary:
A new female student teacher comes to Keima’s school; her name is Jun Nagase, and is assigned to Keima’s class. She’s very excited about starting to teach, and uses the wrestler Jumbo Tsuruma as her role model. She becomes an immediate hit with Keima’s class, but while observing the class she notices Keima playing his games and is puzzled why no one is saying anything. As Jun notices the whole class ignoring Keima’s “odd” behavior, she begins to wonder if he’s a ghost only she can see. After talking to the teacher Nikaidō-sensei, she is told to just ignore him; which leads Jun to think that Keima’s possibly the son of a Yakuza boss and is threatening the teachers to not do anything. After talking with the other teaches, she finds that while Keima seems like a problem student, there are a lot aspects to him that prevent the teachers from being able to do anything to him. Jun decides to try to change Keima so he can participate in class. She tries to talk to Keima the next day, but gets surprised from staring in his eyes and runs away. She comments that Keima’s eyes were like those of someone who was watching from a different world, and goes on to say that Keima really doesn’t expect anything from reality. Jun stops to think, and comes to the conclusion that Keima plays games because he’s lonely and strengthens her resolve to save him. At that moment a spirit comes out of a try and seemingly possesses Jun. Jun is startled briefly, but is unable to grasp what happened and runs back to class.
The next morning n class the boys are commenting on how pretty Jun is, and the girls are making fun of them because they don’t have a chance with her. Elcea comments to Keima that teachers-in-training are interesting, but Keima tells her that teachers have odd parameters and all the work that goes into capturing them is solely from the player character. Jun comes into the classroom and receives a standing ovation from the male students. Elcea’s Ruanway Spirit Detector goes off, and she realizes Jun is possessed by a Runaway Spirit. Elcea tells Keima later during their break that Jun is in possession of a runaway spirit, but Keima doesn’t seem to have much interest in the matter. Keima tells her that there’s no future in falling in love with a teacher. The reason for this being that teachers view students as friends at best, and it is a large hurdle to get one to love you. It takes a lot of effort to change the nature of student-teacher relationships, and it’ll take too much time to perform a capture. With that Keima asks Elcea to prepare a substitute of him to attend class while he leaves to prepare a plan.
Keima starts to leave, but is stopped by Jun, who tries to stop him by asking him to have lunch with her. Her friendliness surprises Keima and he avoids making eye contact with her. The on looking male students are jealous of Keima. Jun notices Keima not making eye contact, and shows him a picture of Jumbo and has a conversation with Keima on how wrestling pursues the ideal of strength while mixed martial arts pursue the power of reality. This statement resonates a little with Keima and he comments that she prefers ideals to reality. Jun is happy that Keima finally responded to her, and Keima realizes his mistake and takes his leave. In the classroom Keima comments that he’s now stuck on being on the “student’ route and that it’ll take a long time to complete the capture.
Opinions:
This episode covers chapters 36 and 37 of the manga. Hearing Keima complain about the effort it takes to capture a teacher gave me the impression that Keima’s a stats man. Having played a good number of galges myself I know the teacher routes can get pretty complicated and annoying to go through. But! If it’s something you really want then the effort is worth it. Maybe it’s a sign that Keima isn’t into older women. I never really gave much thought to who voiced Jun before, but Aki Toyosaki really a perfect choice for the role. Watching Jun really reminds me of what it’s like to really be psyched about something and then the reality. In this case she’s passionate about teaching and I’m sure a lot of teachers are when starting out, but I’m sure some teacher lose some of that spirit as they face the reality of being a teacher. Things don’t go your way all the time, and I’m sure that’s what it’s like for Jun right now.
