Summary:

On August 27, Kanade visits the school’s Game Research Club to commission them to make a game. That same day, Nakuru and Masamune are also making preparations. The next day on August 28th, Kureha tries to wake up Kinjirou to let him know that it’s her birthday but Kinjirou is still fast asleep. Kureha decides to let him sleep and leaves to go to Masamune’s place. There she celebrates her 16th birthday with Masamune and Nakuru. Masamune has prepared a feast and Nakuru wrote a BL script that she and Masamune act out for Kureha. While eating, Masamune reveals that her home has some ghosts living there, and it turns out that Kureha is afraid of ghosts. Nakuru gives Kureha some glasses that she claims will keep ghosts away for her birthday present, and Masamune gives her a body pillow of Subaru for her present.

For the 2nd half of the party, they move to Masamune’s part-time job, “Maid in Heaven Madi Café”. There Kanade and Subaru greet Kureha, and it seems that Kanade rented out the whole café for Kureha’s party. There everyone sings to Kureha, and Subaru gives her a lamb plushie for her present. Later they play the fighting game that Kanade had commissioned the Game Research Club to work on. The game features Kureha and Kinjirou (in his boxers and sporting a more boisterous and perverted personality) as characters. Kureha starts reminiscing about her past birthdays and remembers on her first birthday since her dad died, that her brother had used all of his savings to buy her a big bear plushie. In the evening Kanade and Subaru take Kureha back home, and on the way Kureha continues reminiscing on her past birthdays. On her 12th birthday she spent the whole day playing video games with Kinjirou, and on her 13th birthday Kinjirou bought her an ice cream cone on a farm. On her 14th birthday they played with fireworks. On her 15th birthday Kinjirou forgot about her birthday and went to a concert. When Kinjirou got home from the concert, Kureha was upset with him and beat him up.

Kanade comments that Kinjirou’s pretty bad and asks Kureha if she’d like to become her little sister instead. Kureha tells her that her brother came to her middle school graduation in place of their mother and he always helps her train. Kureha comments that her brother is always taking care of her and comments she should stop clinging to her brother. Kureha gets dropped off and walks inide the house. There she finds a large present lying on the floor. Kinjirou comes out and wishes her a happy birthday and Kureha opens the present. It’s a plushie of a polar bear, and Kureha is happy to have it. Kinjirou apologizes to Kureha for last year and remembers how when he saw the said look on her face, he promised himself that he’d never make the same mistake again. Kureha asks Kinjirou if she can hug him and Kureha proceeds to put Kinjiou in various submission holds and cries out of happiness. Later at Masamune’s, Masamune is playing the game that Kanade gave her and it seems to be a prank game like she thought it was.

Opinions:

Yeah! More maids this episode too! This episode is all about Kureha, and appropriately since it “is” her birthday! With all of Kureha’s flashbacks, it seems like despite how she treats Kinjiou she’s kinda always had a brother complex. They implied it already, but they’ve given some backstory this episode. I am curious about Kanade’s angle with throwing Kureha  a party. There is the simple answer of doing it to be nice, but with Kanade there ware always other reasons to consider. Could it be to appeal to Kureha and cement her relationship with Kinjirou through his family? I wouldn’t put it past Kanade, but that was a great burn that she gave Masamune with that game. I forget what story the game’s based on though. It involves someone in Hell and a spider’s thread that’s used to climb out….. it’ll come to me eventually.
