Summary:

Ayumu has a dream of when she first met Hayate; Ayumu was apparently driving out of control on her bike and Hayate saved her by pulling her off her bike. Ayumu wakes up and wonders what Hayate is doing now. At that moment Hayate is asking Maria for gift ideas since he wants to buy something for Hinagiku to repay her for letting him stay at her home. After talking with Maria, Hayate decides to do some browsing and goes into town. He looks at clothes first, but it turns out to be too expensive; Hayate starts thinking that it’d be helpful to get the perspective of a girl around his age. Just as Hayate is thinking that he runs into Ayumu, and Hayate recruits her to help him pick out a gift. Things get awkward when the two remember what happened on Valentine’s Day, but Miki, Izumi, and Risa interrupt them calling them “one of those famous stupid couples”. Hayate explains that they’re only shopping for Hina’s present and the three take the opportunity to let Hayate know when their birthdays are (Miki’s is September 9th, Izumi’s is June 21st, and Risa’s is July 13th). Miki introduces the three of them to Ayumu as Hayate’s lovers, but Hayate assures her they’re only joking. Ayumu leaves, saying that Hayate doesn’t need her now with the other girls there. Unfortunately her bike goes out of control again, but Hayate is able to stop her by putting himself in front of the bike and stopping it with his face.  Hayate tells Ayumu that he told her to be careful before, and fixes her bike; Ayumu is touched that Hayate remembered the first time they met, but Hayate says it’s not hard to forget since it was quite a shocking incident. Miki, Izumi, and Risa check up on the two to see if they’re ok, and the five of them try thinking of a gift for Hina.

At that moment at Hakuō, Kaoru-sensei asks Hina to look for Izumi, Miki, and Risa since they disappeared. Hina finds them with Hayate, and hides behind a wall and overhears their conversation on what to get her for a gift. Hayate suggests a cute stuffed doll; which makes Hina happy, until Hayate adds “because Hina has a surprisingly childish side”. Izumi suggest roses, but Miki says that Hina is surprisingly clumsy so she’ll prick herself. Risa suggests a game, but Miki says it’s out of the question since Hina will probably break it the moment they give it to her. Ayumu suggests clothes or accessories, and Miki agrees; though she interprets clothes and accessories to mean military clothes and brass knuckles. Unbeknownst to them, these comments are starting to tick Hina off. Hayate and Ayumu split off from Izumi, Miki, and Risa and they go on their own to browse for gifts. Now that Miki, Risa, and Izumi are alone, Miki suggests a soccer ball since Hina’s a little boy on the inside. Hina appears behind them at that moment and the Miki tells her they’re talking about someone else named Hina. Hina asks them what happened to Hayate, Miki replies that he’s definitely on a date with Ayumu.

As Hayate and Ayumu are walking down the street, Ayumu is thinking of how to extend her time with Hayate since she’s not so lucky that such happiness would last long. As she’s thinking, Hayate offers to buy them ice cream and Ayumu slips up with a bad joke. Hayate tells her that he’s thinking of what to get her in return for the chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but remembers Ayumu hugging him and drops his ice cream cone. Hayate apologizes and attributes his awkwardness to that being the first time someone confessed to him like that, and Ayumu replies that that was also her first time confessing to someone. Ayumu runs off, claiming she needs to clean her hand after some ice cream got on it. Hina, Miki, Izumi, and Risa appear behind Hayate and question why Hayate would reject such a cute girl like Ayumu; Risa asks Hayate if he likes guys. Hayate tells them that it’s not that he hates Ayumu, it’s just that he doesn’t have the qualifications to have a girlfriend since he doesn’t have the ability to support a girl for the rest of her life.

Hina questions Hayate’s logic, but Hayate tells her that this is what his former girlfriend told him. The girls are shocked to her that Hayate had a girlfriend, but Hayate clarifies he had a girlfriend when he was 5. Apparently the girl (who Hayate calls A-tan) told him that if he wants a girlfriend, he needs to be stronger and kinder than anyone else; in addition he must also have enough financial ability to support her for life. When young Hayate tells her it’s too hard for him, A-tan kicks him in the stomach and tells him that guys who can’t do that don’t have the qualifications to have a girlfriend and Hayate tells Hina that that’s how he learned with his body that you need to be able to support a girl for life to have a girlfriend. Hina comments to herself that it’s because of that “evil queen” that Hayate’s perceptions are so messed up and Hayate restates that it’s not because he hates Ayumu. Ayumu is nearby hiding behind a wall, and overhears this and seems happy to know she isn’t hated.

Hayate returns to the mansion and tells Nagi he was just out buying a birthday present for Hinagiku, but Nagi questions why Hayate needs to buy a gift for Hina. Hayate tells her it’s because she’s taken good care of him, and before Nagi can say more Hayate gives her a small gift. It turns out to be a hairpin and Nagi seems really happy, but Nagi goes back to the subject of Hina’s gift. Hayate is talking with Maria later about Hina’s gift, and uses the opportunity to ask when Maria’s birthday is. Maria changes the subject and asks Hayate to take care of the dishes. While Hayate is doing the dishes, he thinks about Maria’s reaction and comes to the conclusion he asked something he shouldn’t have. Hayate apologizes to Maria later, and Maria reveals that her decided birthday is December 24th, since she doesn’t know her real birthday, parent’s faces, or her actual name. Hayate apologizes, and Maria agrees with him saying he mad her remember such an unpleasant thing; though Maria assures him she’s only joking. Hayate hands her a stuffed bunny and tells her he got that for her along with the present for Nagi, but wonders if the gift was too childish for Maria. Maria tells him it’s not and smiles saying its the first gift she’s gotten from Hayate and wonders what Hayate will get her for her actual birthday and asks him to get her something better than what Santa Claus would get her. The next day Maria is a little peeved to find that the stuffed rabbit Hayate got her is actually a mascot character where the bunny is actually an assassin from hell; though it seems Hayate was unaware.

Opinions:

Well this episode covered 3 chapters of material and it seems the next episode starts off the Hina arc with the next episode being “Hina Matsuri” and I believe features the debut of Ayasaki Hermioni. The big surprise for me this episode was Athena. I mean I knew she would make an appearance in Hayate’s flashback, but I certainly didn’t expect Kawasumi Ayako to voice her; her voice is simply perfect for the role!! I’m excited about this because it implies an appearance of Athena; so either they’ll get that far in the anime to where we see Hayate’s past, or Athena will make an early appearance similar to how Ayumu did last season. Either way works for me; what’s that you say? Why am I convinced that could happen? A good question, it’s typically because for a small 1-time or less frequent role they’ll typically reuse seiyūs (case in point, Satō Rina voices Makimura Shiori, Azumamiya Koutarou, Eight, and Nadja Orumuzuto) and when they cast a big name for a role (like how Horie Yui voices Sonia) they’re typically on the show in a consistent manner even if they’re not in the main storyline (like how we just saw Ayumu randomly eating in scenes not involving her last season). There thus ends my argument; any rebuttals?
