Summary:

It’s Valentine’s Day and Nagi has locked herself up in the kitchen trying to make chocolate for Hayate; though Maria hopes it doesn’t turn into something inedible. At Wataru’s store he’s trying out Ayumu’s chocolate; Ayumu is pumped for Valentine’s Day since it’s the one-day girls have support in confessing their love. Ayumu plans to go to Hakuo Academy to give her chocolate to Hayate, but Wataru questions if he’ll accept it since Ayumu has been turned down once already (remember episode 12 where Hayate was visiting his old school? Hayate said he was only interested in 2D girls?); this depresses Ayumu and she starts to cry. While Ayumu is outside walking she thinks that Wataru is right, since she feels that Hayate won’t accept chocolates with intentions of becoming her boyfriend with his personality and decides to get him some obligation chocolate. Back at the mansion Nagi is the kitchen botching her chocolate, and even skips school to continue making chocolate; Hayate tries to get her to come, but Maria says to leave her alone since it’s an important day for girls.

In the Student Council room, Hina has a mountain of chocolate on her desk from girls; Hina comments that it’s strange for a girl to be given chocolate, but Miki tells her it’s because she’s cooler than the guys. Hina defends herself she’s being feminine, and Miki agrees that she’s better than when they were younger; where Hina apparently was quite brutish. Miki asks her if she’s going to eat all the chocolate, and Hina comments that she can’t throw them away since they each have the feelings of the girls who gave them to her. Miki hands her chocolate from her and tells Hina that she has to be cool no matter what and leaves the room. Back at the mansion, Maria is teaching Nagi how to temper chocolate; though before she can show her anymore Nagi takes over since she feels it’s pointless if Maria does all the work. Back at Hakuo, Hina is going out to get milk and runs into Ayumu; who is having a hard time with the school’s security. Hina notices Ayumu’s chocolate and helps her out with security. Hina notices that Ayumu has two chocolates and asks her if she’s double dating; Ayumu denies it and says there’s only one person she likes. Hina offers to call whoever it is that Ayumu plans to give her chocolate to since the school’s big. Ayumu takes her up on her offer and tells her the person she’s looking for is a freshman names Ayasaki Hayate, which surprises Hina a little.

In the student council room Hayate is apologizing to Hina, because he feels he’s done something to make her angry. Hina directs him to the backroom and let’s him know he has a guest; Hayate heads over and meets Ayumu. Hina decides to leave the two alone and heads to the elevator, but before shc can get on Ayumu bursts out of the back room and rooms into the elevator. A confused Hina asks Hayate what happened, and Hayate replies that Ayumu just wanted to give him obligatory chocolates and asked that they always be good friends. Hina understands the situation and commands Hayate to go chase after Ayumu to get his chocolates exchanged. Ayumu is under a bridge and tries to comfort herself by saying she at least met her objective of giving Hayate chocolate. As Ayumu is beating up herself over not being able to confess, Hayate appears behind her; Ayumu immediately embraces him. Ayumu hands Hayate her Valentine’s chocolate and tells him he doesn’t have to answer right away and asks him to accept her chocolate; which Hayate does. At that moment, Hina is walking home telling herself she made the right choice; as she’s walking Ayumu catches up with her and thanks her for her help. Ayumu offers her the obligatory chocolates as thanks; the two introduce themselves to each other and Hina accepts the chocolates and continues on her way, with Ayumu commenting how cool Hina is and wonders if Hayate would like her if she were more like her. As Hina is walking she comes across Miki who comments that it’s doing things like she just did that gets her all those chocolates every year.

Back on the Sanzenin estate, Hayate is having a conversation with the dead priest on love until Maria shows up. Maria inquires if Hayate’s worries has to do with Valentine’s Day and it turns into a conversation where Hayate asks Maria for advice on love; though Hayate inadvertently hurts Maria by taking jabs at Maria’s lack of a love life if both her current and past experiences. Maria gets a little upset at Hayate since he’s questioning his worth, as he has no experience with love; unaware that Maria’s in the same boat. Back inside the mansion Maria is thinking about what Hayate said and thinks that there’s no boys around her age to give chocolate to; but remembers that Hayate is around her age and the two have seen each other in the bath before and decides it would hurt to give Hayate chocolate. Nagi calls Hayate over and questions the point of girls giving chocolate to guys; though Nagi tries to defend herself saying it has nothing to do with her failed attempts. Nagi commands Hayate to make her chocolate since it’s ok if it’s Hayate since he has girlish features and imagines him in a sailor-suit girl’s uniform.  Hayate comes into the kitchen and finds Maria and explains the situation; Hayate asks what Maria is doing and wonders if she’s making chocolates for Tama or Klaus. This understandably pisses Maria off and she decides to show Hayate the pride of an older woman and gets fired up. The first chocolate Maria makes is a modest heart-shaped chocolate with a strawberry on top and some icing with St. Valentine’s written on it; feeling proud of it, she looks at Hayate’s chocolate. Hayate has a nice white chocolate sculpture of a swan with chocolate flowers decorating the back with Hayate wondering if he should refine the form more. Maria comments that Hayate’s good at this and Hayate replies it’s because he’s worked part-time at a bakery before.  Hayate asks how Maria’s chocolate went, but before he can see it Maria smashes it. Maria comments to herself that she underestimated Hayate and plans to show off her stuff since she doesn’t wear an apron dress for nothing. Maria’s second piece is a golden chocolate phoenix on a white cake surrounded by chocolate flowers. Maria comments that she might’ve overdone it. When she checks on Hayate, it seems he decided to focus on taste and made a chocolate looking similar to Maria’s first one which shocks her. Nagi comes in to check on the chocolate and tries it; it’s delicious. Nagi notices Maria’s chocolate and wonders who it is for since it seems a bit much for obligatory chocolate; Maria panics and says it’s not for Hayate. This leads the two to believe it’s for Maria herself and they comment that she’s’ a glutton. This embarrasses and depresses Maria and she runs out telling the two to order take-out for dinner.

Outside near the pond Hayate hands Maria some chocolate commenting he understands why they give chocolate on Valentine’s Day; it’s because it’s a day where you work a little harder for someone, to do something you normally don’t do and it makes you happy to have your chocolate you put everything into accepted.

Opinions:

Well that’s a great Valentine’s ep; though it’s nowhere near the season for it. I really felt for “Akiba’s Lord British” this episode; not being the one to get chocolates or candies is beyond depressing. Frankly it leaves a resentment that can only be equivalent to a vengeful spirit. “All guys that get chocolate should die” I understand that sentiment all too well…. On that note I super sympathize for Maria; it was pretty adorable of her when she was “showing the pride of an older woman”. Ahhh the Maria reactions this episode were too cute for words; it’s just too bad that her cutest reactions involve her humiliation. In any case, this is the episode that starts the whole HinaXAyumu dynamic for those into that. Preview shows we’re close to the arc where Hayate stays over at Hina’s house, which means we’re really close to Hina’s birthday episode. Can’t wait and I’m still crossing my fingers for them to put in Itou Shizuka’s rendition of Cruel Angel’s Thesis to make it to the actual episode.
