Summary:

Half a year ago, Ayumu’s brother Kazuki met Nagi. It was love at first site; Kazuki offered her his handkerchief when he noticed tears in her eyes. Nagi takes the handkerchief and asks for his name and he replies Nishizawa Kazuki and asks for Nagi’s name, but before she can say her name Nagi’s SP comes to pick her up and takes her away.  In present day, Nagi is trying to get a box of cookies that are at the top of the shelf; Nagi gets on the tip of her toes, but she still can’t reach it. Nagi still tries to reach for it; falling down as she tries, until Hayate picks up the box and hands it to her. Nagi’s face turns sullen and she Hayate if he wants a cookie; Hayate declines, but Nagi gives it to him anyway and runs off. Maria tells Hayate that the mansion is too big for Nagi as the doors are big and heavy, and the halls are long. Hayate proposes remodeling the house to make it smaller since Nagi obviously has the money for it. Maria replies that they could do that if Nagi weren’t such a sore loser; since living in a remodeled house is the same as living in defeat for Nagi. Maria comments that Nagi has an air of inferiority that they tend to miss; which is why she has frown on her face most of the year. Suddenly the SP come in to inform that they’ve lost Nagi, and Hayate tells Maria to leave Nagi to him.

Out on the street, Nagi is pondering why she won’t grow; as she goes on she remembers she knows someone who has the same problem. At that moment in Wataru’s video store, Kazuki is talking to Wataru about Nagi. Eventually toward the end of the conversation Nagi shows up. Nagi comes up to Wataru, confirms he’s also short and leaves. Kazuki also decides to leave and goes to follow Nagi; leaving Wataru to wallow in his frustration over Nagi’s comment. As Nagi is walking outside, she notices Kazuki tailing her and confronts him about it. While Kazuki is trying to explain himself; Nagi deduces him to be a stalker. Kazuki denies this and tries to tell her that he’s liked her since half a year ago; eventually he starts crying, but is able to confess his feelings. Nagi starts blushing and gets flustered and finally tells him that confessing all of a sudden with so many people around is embarrassing. Kazuki reflects on his actions, but decides not to give up and invites Nagi to ride the train with him; which peaks her interest as she’s also a train fan.  Having never actually ridden a train, Nagi has trouble getting past the gate; though Kazuki helps her with this. While waiting for the train Nagi is excited to get on; the first one speeds by and Nagi depressingly says that she can’t find the timing to get on, but Kazuki corrects her saying the next one will stop. On the train Nagi is happily watching the city as the pass by the scenery; Kazuki looks at her curiosity with a smile on his face. Nagi and Kazuki proceed to go to a series of places such as the crepe shop and the arcade; with Hayate secretly watching and protecting her date.

The last stop for Nagi and Kazuki is the park where Kazuki invites her on a small boat, and he paddles them off to the middle of the lake. Kazuki asks Nagi if she had fun today, and Nagi comments that it was fun playing with a boy her age. Though Nagi tells him that he shouldn’t get any closer to her since there’s already someone she likes; Kazuki asks her if the guy she likes is Wataru. Nagi is shocked by this and prompts her to get up angrily shouting why she would like that shorty; Nagi’s sudden movement rocks the boat and causes her to fall over. Fortunately Hayate is there to prevent her from falling over, but the fact he has been secretly observing Nagi is found out. As Nagi starts asking Hayate if he’s watched her the whole time, Hayate tells her and Kazuki to enjoy themselves and takes his leave. Kazuki asks who that person was, and Nagi tells him that he’s her butler, Ayasaki Hayate. As Nagi looks at Hayate leaving, Kazuki wonders if the person Nagi likes is Hayate. In the evening, Nagi’s SP comes to pick her up; as Nagi leaves she tells Kazuki she’ll return his handkerchief another time.  As Nagi gets driven off, Kazuki thinks to himself that it’s too early to give up.

At Wataru’s video store, Ayumu asks him if he knows why Kazuki is acting strange. Since Ayumu is pestering Wataru about it, he says he’ll look into it for her. Wataru heads to Nagi’s place and asks her if anything happened with Kazuki. This causes Nagi to get flustered and Wataru believes something did happen and decides to ask Hayate for the details; Nagi threatens Wataru not to talk about the matter with Hayate otherwise she’ll open a huge video rental store near his. As Wataru leaves, Hayate comes back with a bouquet of roses; as Hayate goes about decorating the room with the roses, Nagi wonders what Hayate thinks about the other day with her and Kazuki. It’s not like she was cheating on Hayate, but she’d prefer it if he were a little jealous instead of indifferent on the matter; Hayate interrupts her thoughts asking if something’s the matter, and Nagi angrily tells him to be quiet as she calls him an idiot. As Nagi angrily marches through the hall, she comments that lately Hayate hasn’t been seeing her as a girl; though the narrator comments he never did to begin with. As Hayate is talking with Maria, wondering if he’s unsuitable for being Nagi’s butler, Maria comments that they wouldn’t be able to find anyone better than him and force feeds him a piece of the apple pie she baked. Hayate tells her it’s delicious as he smiles, and Maria advises to not worry about small things and tells him he’s cuter with a smile.

Unbeknownst to the two, Nagi is watching them; though she couldn’t hear what they were talking about, Nagi sulks and comments that Hayate hasn’t smiled for her in a while. Sakuya, who’s next to Nagi, comments that Hayate must be bored of Nagi since they’re together a lot. When Nagi asks what she should do, Sakuya advises giving him new stimulation such as using some feminine charm; basically get Hayate to look at Nagi in a different light. Though as Sakuya looks closely at Nagi’s body, she tells her to forget about it and suggests moving to a different plan. Hayate appears behind Sakuya and pulls her shirt back to its proper position telling her girls shouldn’t do that. Sakuya, frustrated at being patronized by Hayate, leaves while calling Hayate an idiot.

As Maria is washing Nagi’s hair in the bath, Nagi asks Maria why Hayate wasn’t jealous. Maria comments to herself that it’s because she wasn’t a romantic candidate for Hayate to begin with. Eventually leaves the room when she uses the metaphor “Hayate doesn’t feed the small fish”. As Maria is walking down the hall, Hayate finds her and informs her that there’s a guest downstairs. Maria tells him to take a towel to Nagi while she deals with the guest. While Hayate takes a towel to Nagi; Nagi, who is expecting Maria and is overheated from the bath, gets out and Hayate sees naked causing her to yell. Nagi decides this is a good chance for Hayate to see her in a different light and has him dry her off blind-folded. Maria notices the two and wonders what happened; though when she sees Nagi walking down the hall with a smile on her face, she comments how cute Nagi looks.

Opinions:

Well they crammed two chapters or so in this episode. I enjoyed the first half where Kazuki takes Nagi on a “date”, and I’m kinda rooting for him to take Nagi; and it’s not just because that takes out the whole Hayate X Nagi, it’s just one less ending to worry about. Though I honestly think Nagi and him make a better couple, even in terms of interaction. It felt like Nagi was being more natural when she was with Kazuki, when she’s with Hayate she seems to expect a certain scenario and gets disappointed by reality every time. In my opinion a real relationship with a person is more like how it was with Kazuki: two people simply enjoying each others company. Well next episodes seems to have Hayate staying over at Hina’s house, and I am looking forward to seeing Hina in an apron dress; frankly I find it a mystery that Hayate hasn’t swooned at the sight. There’s that to look forward to, and there’s *Ta Da* School girl outfit Maria! equipped with glasses. So many cosplay opportunities await us next episode, and I believe we’re a good 10 or so episodes away from “Mind Education”!! So much to look forward to!!!
